Destro AI’s secret sauce is getting robots and humans on the same page
Executive Summary
Destro came out of stealth with an $8 million seed round and an unusual pitch: the best path to deploying robots is not building one. Founder Manthan Pawar, a NYU Tandon robotics graduate with eight years in US supply chain and robotics, says most robotics companies start from 'what cool things I can do' — while Destro starts from its customers' problems. 'One of the biggest reasons we are winning against robotics companies is because we are not a robotics company.' Instead of a robot body, Destro sells an AI intelligence layer: Mothership directs the whole workflow, and Vision uses open-weight vision-language-action models to control robots from camera images and instructions. The proving ground: logistics giant Yusen, whose US automation director Richard Brunelle oversees about 30 facilities. Yusen's challenge: cross-docking — unloading one truck's goods and sorting them into mixed loads for final-delivery trucks. Destro piloted at one Pacific Northwest facility with three Miva Robotics cart movers: as workers unload goods into carts, robots fetch full loads and deliver them, with human, carts, and trucks all directed by Mothership. Yusen had tried two other big-name robot startups; one couldn't manage loading, the other needed a human to orchestrate. Destro won by directing the whole process. The pilot is expanding to 26 robots, plus another 17-robot pilot in Southern California, and Pawar aims to be cash-flow positive by end of year. The round was led by Base10 Partners and Bonfire Ventures, with CoFound Partners.
Why This Matters
Destro's insight travels well beyond warehouses: the value isn't in the shiny robot, it's in orchestrating the whole workflow — including the humans. If you automate anything, automate the process, not just the task. That's the difference between a pilot and a deployment.
