Sam Altman is the co-founder and CEO of OpenAI, the San Francisco lab behind ChatGPT and the GPT model series. He has led the company since 2019, steering its transformation from a nonprofit research lab into the most valuable private AI company in the world.
Before OpenAI, Altman was president of startup accelerator Y Combinator from 2014 to 2019. At OpenAI he oversaw the launch of ChatGPT in 2022, successive GPT model generations, and the company's push into AI agents and developer platforms.
At OpenAI DevDay on September 29, 2026, he laid out a 'model, build, distribution' strategy, unveiled the GPT-6.1 Sol model and always-on 'Dots' agents, and said OpenAI will not go public until it can make stronger safety assurances. Bloomberg reported the company is raising at least $30 billion at a valuation of about $1.4 trillion.
